Volunteering in Cuba

Cuba Beyond the Beaches is pleased to bring you an exciting program for teachers, students, and qualified small groups.

Be a volunteer: make a puppet, paint a wall, repair some chairs, refurbish instruments, teach some songs, make some teaching aids or toys.

Schools in Cuba need your help. Donations or labour can make an enormous difference to a school or kindergarten.

Authorized visits to schools – Santiago de Cuba. Santiago de Cuba is the most Caribbean of Cuba’s cities. Music and dance show the strong influence of Cuba’s slave heritage. Mountains and coast are full of micro-climates supporting unique flora and fauna.

Combine volunteering with a full, fun educational programme for students and teachers and others. Learn the history and culture of this fascinating city and island. Visit cloud forests, wetlands, and farms. Explore coral reefs in azure seas. All programmes are led by local experts.

Teachers interchange ideas, hopes and concerns with your contemporaries in Cuba.

Home stays, great food, secure and comfortable living in the heart of the city.

Medical Professionals wishing to volunteer. It is almost impossible for a single volunteer to gain access to local clinics and hospitals. The volunteer must be prepared for a long delay, while each case is considered.

Teaching facilities – it is more possible to place a volunteer in a teaching facility provided you have qualifications and skills which can be incorporated in the work of students and faculty. All visits and work at the university level must be accompanied by authorization from the university International Relations and an academic visa must be obtained outside the country prior to arrival.

Please note that very few people speak English. A rudimentary, or better, knowledge of Spanish is a great asset, interpreters are available – generally their cost must be covered by the volunteer.

Upcoming Volunteer Projects

Traditional Medicine in Cuba

“TRADITIONAL MEDICINE IN CUBA”

Cuba Beyond the Beaches brings you an exciting workshop of non-Western medicine techniques, prescriptions and beliefs. Explore with us the use of acupuncture as a serious alternative to anaesthetic, the use of herbal resources as an everyday prescription, and the religious connections to spiritual healing.

This five day workshop is led by a Masters of Traditional Medicine, who is also a qualified Western-tradition medical doctor, and by various instructors who have been chosen for their particular skills. Your lecturer, Doctora Graciela has been in practice for 14 years. Her practice is part of a major policlinico in the city of Santiago. Her therapies are used alone or as an adjunct to Western medicine by the general practitioners and specialists attached to the clinic.

Day 1 – Arrival in Santiago.

You will be met and taken to your choice of accommodation. In Santiago we can arrange for you to stay in pleasant homestays which are licensed and inspected by the government, in a hostal which is a tiny hotel in a restored and renovated colonial or republic building, or in one of the major hotels.

Day 2 – Introduction to Traditional Medicine in Cuba

Morning lecture provides an overview of the Cuban healthcare system; the place of traditional medicine practioners within that system; and, the use of traditional techniques and prescriptions by Cuban practioners of Western medicine.

Lunch on an island in the bay

Interchange of practice experience by three medical professionals who use a variety of different techniques and skills, and who are part of the traditional/Western medicine system in Cuba.

Day 3 – Accupressure and Movement Therapies

A morning lecture and practicum of Accupressure. This technique is used to provide pain relief and can be taught for self-administration by patients. There will be ample opportunity to experience the application of the technique, and to learn with a live model.

Lunch

Movement Therapy. Watch and experience a class of movement therapy provided for all ages. In a country where everyone seems to know how to dance, it is important to keep the practice of movement for older people to help them maintain their flexibility, and their muscular and skeletal strength.

Art Therapy. Children throughout Cuba’s school system have access to Art Classes as therapy for a range of behavioural and psychological problems. An instructor in Art Therapy will show examples of the work being done, and explain his role as a therapist.

Day 4 – Medicinal Plants and Energy Pyramids

An early start will take you to some of the larger medicinal plant gardens in and around the city. These gardens supply plant parts to traditional practioners and the traditional pharmacies of the city.

Visit to one of the several stores around the city which sell medicinal plant material for personal use.

A drive of about an hour will take you out of Santiago and along the desert-like coastal strip with its fields of sugar and yucca, its palms and tamarind trees, and its small villages. We will be visiting an artisan colony for lunch. Set amid tall trees this quiet community provides the perfect antidote to the busy city.

Afternoon visit to practioners with Energy Pyramids. These practioners use their skills not only for humans, but also the local animal population.

Day 5 – Homeopathy and Traditional Medicine for Animals

A morning lecture on the various homeopathic techniques including flower therapy, medicinal plants infusions, electro-magnetism, etc. You will have the opportunity to experience many of these techniques, and to hear of the research which supports their use.

Lunch

Visit to a local veterinary clinic which uses homeopathic techniques for its animal patients

Day 6 – Colour Therapy and Spiritual Healing

A brief introduction to Colour Therapy and its uses with Traditional Medicine. Western research has validated the use of colours to stimulate or calm patients, workers, and shoppers. In Cuba more extensive and detailed use is made of colour as an alternative therapy.

An introduction to Santeria. Santeria is the major Afro-Cuban religion of Cuba, particularly of the Santiago area. A mixture of Yoruba and Spanish Catholic myths, it forms an intricate and integral part of the Cuban perspective, informing music, art, dance, and spiritual beliefs and practices. This introduction is designed to provide you with the basic information you need for understanding its role in Cuban culture and to follow the significance of some of its basic attributes. Santeria rituals include the use of many different plants, the significance of various of the most important will be explained.

Lunch

The Santeria belief system is used by large portions of the Cuban population for spiritual and physical healing. A Santeria practitioner will take you through part of a healing ceremony.

Photographing Cuba

Photographic Workshop

Place The workshop will take place in Santiago de Cuba. The islandís first capital, Santiago is a city of hills, lookouts, colonial squares and beautifully preserved buildings. It is a people city with much of the life of the city in the streets, the heart of the city is a park, peopled by lovers, dancers, musicians and sometime hoards of children on bicycles, scooters. This is a city of neighbourhoods, each with its distinct appearance and lifestyle.

The clarity of light blends and fractures colours, a new palette with each hour and every day. Beautiful children, neo-colonial buildings, and a vivacity to life which blends old and new, provide prolific material for the well-placed lens.

Whether you are sticking to black and white, 35mm and multiple lens, or 8 pixels this workshop will provide an intensive experience of composition, history, and techniques. Together you will discover the inside of Cuba, its history, people, and places.

This workshop is available year round. A personalize one on one experience is available as well.

Workshop Leader Rene Silviera, Photographer – Santiago de Cuba

Rene Silviera is one of Santiago de Cubaís leading photographers. As senior photographer for the Office of the Conservador of the City of Santiago de Cuba, he knows and loves this beautiful city and its inhabitants.

Starting in television in his early 20ís he became a noted prize winner of awards for still photography starting in 1987. Since that time there has barely been a year in which he did not win awards, have his work appear in prestigious exhibitions, or in some of Cubaís leading publications. In 2002 he was the chosen photographer for the catalogue for an exhibition of art dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Cubaís foremost hero and poet, Jose Marti, which included 100 of Cubaís leading artists.

Reneís working is exciting in its clarity of vision and its use of vibrant colour. His techniques of composition and use of the special tropical light of this part of Eastern Cuba bring his images off the page. Whether he is photographing every day life, architectural details, or the natural beauty outside the city, Rene brings an affection to his subjects which invites further exploration.

Rene wants workshop participants to come to know and love his city and people through the lens of their cameras. To explore with him the possibilities of tropical light; to take home with them images of faces and places, but to leave a part of their heart in this city by the bay.

For the afternoon Rolando will introduce you to the important world of Santeria.

From the time of Columbus, Spanish Catholicism with it panoply of saints and many festivals was the principal religion of Cuba. Here and there were tiny pockets of Indians, still practicing their religions, but most of their culture had been swept away by the middle of the 16th century. The influx of African slaves building to major imports by the mid-19th century changed the face of Cuba and its religions. At first allowed to practice their own religions, their sheer numbers became a threat especially during their festivals. Their religions were suppressed and Christianity imposed. However, the Yoruba transferred the attributes of their African gods to Christian saints and so found a way to stay within the law and practice their religion. This tour explores the importance of that mixture as it informs art, music and dance in Cuba.

You will visit various private altars, the Basilica of The Patron Saint of Cuba, finishing the afternoon with a demonstration of Afro-Cuban dance.

City & Mountain Tour

Come visit this most Caribbean of Cuban cities. Once the capital of Cuba, it is a perfect introduction to the culture and history of Cuba. Our walking tours in the mountains are accompanied by naturalists who will help you explore the plants, birds and butterflies on this beautiful island.

When should you come – Cuba is the land of perpetual summer. Flowering trees and plants abound.
Winter birders enjoy both local and transient birds, summer birders enjoy the courting displays and nestlings of local birds. Butterfly lovers feast their eyes on huge moths, and colourful butterflies whatever the season.

So pack some good shoes and a camera and enjoy our walking tours.

Day 1

Arrival in Santiago de Cuba. However you join us in this vibrant Colonial city, our friendly staff will meet you and take you to your homestay. Dinner in your homestay.

Day 2 Architect Led Walking Tour of Santiago

An early start will take you on a walking tour through three interesting neighbourhoods in this Colonial city. Your lecturer is a conservation architect. We start in the oldest part of the city, exploring the vibrant streets and the tranquil, elegant squares, Colonial streetscapes are being restored to their former glories, but often to new uses. (In case you wonder how the colours of the city work so well together – ask your lecturer – he chooses them!) A walk through the city takes us to one of the elegant pre-revolutionary neighbourhoods where palaces now house community centres and exclusive clubs play host to school children of all ages. We’ll take time to drop by one of the city’s markets and enjoy a delightful lunch in one of those restored buildings. Dinner in your homestay.

Day 3 Ferns, Orchids and Cloud Forest

After an early breakfast we’ll collect our botanist lecturer in his fabulous fern garden. Home to a collection of more than 3000 tropical ferns (some named after him) and a growing collection of orchids. We’ll travel east of the city to the Gran Piedra. This magnificent outlier of the Sierra Maestras often disappears into the clouds. As we travel from the coastal plain to the summit cloud forest we’ll stop to enjoy the changing vegetation. There is an easy climb to the summit with native orchids and ferns in great abundance. By lunchtime the forest is full of butterflies. After the climb to the summit we’ll explore the 19c Haitian style Cafetal which has been recently restored and is now a UNESCO museum. We’ll visit the large commercial garden where beds of bird of paradise flowers, gladioli, roses and many native plants are surrounded by fragrant hedges, and where every corner affords a new vista of mountains and plains. Late lunch in a local paladar with visits to Artisan Studios. Dinner in your homestay.

Day 4 History of Cuba – From Pre-Columbus to Independence

We begin the day with a short orientation to the history of this island. We start our walk at the “oldest house” in the Americas, tour the Emilio Barcardi Museum with its treasure trove of artifacts. Jumping ahead in time we will visit the famous San Juan Hill and the tree under which the Cuban Spanish American war finally ended. “El Morro” the 17th century castle built to protect the city against the privateers and pirates like Henry Morgan who sought to relieve Spain of the wealth of Latin America guards the magnificent bay which has provided safe harbour for galleons and oil tankers, yachts and men-‘o-war. The little launch which circles the bay will take us to one of the main islands for lunch and an afternoon stroll in this friendly community. Dinner in your homestay.

Day 5 Sierra Maestra drive

An early start will put us on the road into the Sierra Maestras. The drive into the mountains takes us through spectacular country, have your cameras ready, we’ll make stops along the way! Lunch and a free afternoon to enjoy the relaxation of the mountain resort. Take a swim in the waterfall pool, or just sit by the sparkling river; enjoy a massage, a sauna, or a friendly game. And at night enjoy local music and walks under the stars.

Day 6 Mountain Walk

A before breakfast walk will take us up into the mountains passed farms and plantations, children on their way to school, farmers and workers starting their days of work in the fields and beneath the trees. The area grows cocoa, coffee, mangoes, oranges and other fruits, and every farm has a mixture of livestock, including sometimes peacocks. After lunch we will take our leave. Return to Santiago in time for dinner in your homestay.

Day 7 Beach Day

A day in the country and at the beach will bring a relaxing conclusion to your visit to Cuba. For groups of four or more an Evening party under the stars including Afro-Cuban entertainment.
